About Us

Family & Children Services, Inc. is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors consisting of up to 24 representatives equally distributed among the communities served. Board members reflect their communities’ needs and guide the agency in their varying areas of expertise. The Board determines policy and guides the growth and mix of services offered to the community. Board members are elected to serve three-year terms of office, limited to two terms.

Staffing

The agency currently employs over 180 staff serving clients onsite in Calhoun and Kalamazoo counties. Services are delivered in clients’ homes, at schools, community centers, Respite Houses and a variety of off-site locations.

Funding

Family & Children Services operating budget for 2007 was $7,957,711. Major funding includes local United Ways, Community Mental Health organizations, the Michigan Department of Human Services, fees for service, and third-party reimbursements. Private contributions from businesses and individuals are welcomed. The agency offers several vehicles for giving including Handle With Care Annual Fund and the James Stanley Gilmore, Ruth McNair Gilmore, Gail Gilmore Smith and Glen C. Smith, Jr. Children's Respite Endowment. All gifts are deductible for income tax purposes to the extent provided by law. Family & Children Services has been designated by the Internal Revenue Service as a nonprofit organization that meets the qualifications of Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

  • United Way member agency – Kalamazoo, Battle Creek, Marshall, and Albion (Allocations determined following review of services by community representatives serving on Allocations Committees)
  • CMHSAS (Community Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services)- Services provided through contracts
  • Michigan Department of Human Services (former Family Independence Agency)- Services provided through contracts Council on Accreditation of Services for Families and Children (COA is the largest, comprehensive, private accrediting body of social and mental health agencies in the United States)
  • Deparment of Consumer and Industry Services Bureau of Regulatory Services, Child Welfare Licensing
  • Licensed provider of substance abuse services
